Crew-2 Launch: Why Spacex Is Sending 4 Astronauts To ISS?
SpaceX has currently transported four astronauts to the International Space Station in Crew-2 .
So why is SpaceX sending four astronauts to the International Space Station?
Currently, an international crew of 7 astronauts is living at the ISS.
NASA's Crew-2 mission manager Ben Stahl says, "It's going to be a sleepover style period of time, with one astronaut sleeping in each of the docked SpaceX capsules.”
However, this will not be a typical sleepover for the team. During their mission, the Crew-2 will be tasked with carrying out numerous scientific experiments. They intend to conduct around 100 experiments during their six-month mission. These experiments are the core reason why NASA and spacex is sending astronauts to ISS.
Acoustic levitation has the potential to be a valuable tool for astronauts researching the microgravity of outer space.
The future of the International Space Station relies upon solar as renewable energy is set to ensure long-term power production for the once-struggling operation.
According to John Mulholland, ISS vice president, and program manager for Boeing, “When it comes to game-changing research and technological development, the Space Station is currently hitting its full stride.”
Scientists hope that this research will potentially help space agencies prepare for long-distance space flights that will subject crews to the rigors of space for an extended period of time, as well as aid in the battle against brain disease on Earth.
Crew-2 was scheduled to launch on April 22 from Nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, but it was delayed by a day due to weather concerns downrange of the launch site.
NASA's immediate goal is to be able to reuse booster rockets at least five times for human space flights while SpaceX hopes to use its Crew Dragon spacecraft to master the art of human spaceflight.
However, it cannot be denied that the mission also came at a time of increasing uncertainty about the future of the ISS, with Russia announcing that it is considering quitting the program and hoping to build its own space station by 2025.
