Europe Is Finally Recognising Statelessness - But the System Still Moves Too Slowly

Europe is finally beginning to recognise statelessness as a structural legal problem.

From June 2026 onward, EU member states will have a legal obligation to identify and record indicators of statelessness during asylum and migration procedures. But is Europe truly prepared to resolve these cases?

In this video, I analyse the newest developments in EU law and policy regarding statelessness, the EU Pact implementation, the lack of Statelessness Determination Procedures across Europe, and the growing danger of people becoming “identified but unresolved.”

The video also explores:

childhood statelessness in Europe,
Germany and Greece under the new Pact framework,
return systems and “unreturnable” persons,
the limits of modern legal categories,
and why exceptional cases may require new legal mechanisms beyond traditional administrative structures.

This discussion is based on recent developments from:

EUAA
ENS (European Network on Statelessness)
Council of Europe materials
ECtHR developments
EU migration and nationality law reforms
