How Can We Reduce the Environmental Impact of Plastics?
Plastic is everywhere. Plastic helps us preserve food, insulate constructions, it is used in electronics, it makes vehicles more fuel-efficient, and far more. Yet, the sheer magnitude of plastics consumption in our societies results in a high production-related carbon footprint, high volumes of waste, persistent pollution, and great harm to wildlife and ecosystems. Plastic waste reached 353 million tonnes in 2019, doubling in just 20 years and exerting immense pressure on the planet. Only 9% is recycled, while 22% is dumped in uncontrolled sites, burned in open pits or ends up in rivers and oceans. This is disastrous to our planet.
Timely and ambitious policies can drastically reduce future environmental damages and in particular plastic leakage to the environment. Growing awareness of plastic pollution is steering public opinion and is paving the for stronger policy intervention by governments on this front. The OECD Global Plastics Outlook reports seek to inform and support these efforts. Learn more: https://www.oecd.org/environment/plastics/.
