Developed countries have seen significant fertility rate drops over centuries due to urbanization, increased productivity, and rising feminism, which prioritizes women's education and careers, often leading to delayed or limited childbearing. By the mid-20th century, most European countries had fertility rates below the 2.1 children per woman replacement rate. The rise of predatory feminine behavior and unfavorable divorce practices have made men hesitant to marry, contributing to the MGTOW movement.

New contraceptive technologies have made it easier for women to avoid unintended pregnancies, but unintended pregnancy rates remain high, with 61% ending in abortion in countries where it's legal in 2020. Some studies suggest that universal contraceptive and abortion access may increase promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases among young women.

Hypergamy, where women marry "up" in terms of social status, education, or income, can delay marriage or result in remaining single, reducing fertility rates. Dating apps have exacerbated this trend, with 80% of women competing for 20% of high-status men. In Japan, South Korea, and China, the percentage of single men, particularly among younger age groups, is notably high, contributing to declining birth rates and aging populations.

Delayed marriage and pregnancy among women have led to an increase in children with chromosomal abnormalities, such as autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome. Some studies suggest a slight decrease in intelligence quotient (IQ) and cognitive development among children born to mothers aged 35 and older. Research on the social skills of children having no siblings is mixed, with some studies finding fewer opportunities to develop social skills and others finding no significant differences.
