Eames Storage Unit 1x1 - Herman Miller - Unboxing

It's been a while since I did an unboxing video! I ordered this Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames (Eames Office) Storage Unit back in October. It was delivered in mid-November. Before purchasing it, I scoured the internet looking for any information about an "unboxing" of one of these units. Since there weren't any, I decided to make my own! I had my eye on this for the last few years and I finally had enough money to afford one. I look forward to growing old with this and someday passing it down to the next generation!

The ESU (Eames Storage Unit) collection was first introduced at the Detroit Institute of Arts in an exhibition in 1949. They went into full production in 1950 (Series 1) and the original design remained in production until 1952. Because the designs were so complex, consisting of hundreds of parts in some cases, they were not able to be "flat packed" and put together by the customer. Instead, the furniture was constructed in the factory at Herman Miller in Zeeland Michigan and then, they were put into crates and shipped out by freight or by rail. The storage units were designed to take a lot of weight compressed straight down but, the thin metal legs suffered from lateral movement in transit. Charles and Ray were constantly improving their designs, so these were redesigned in 1953 (Series 2) which strengthened and repositioned the legs. But by 1955, Herman Miller took them out of production.

Charles and Ray never designed anything to fit a style or a particular market. They were taking technology left over from the war effort and repurposing them into useful furniture for the home. These pieces have Japanese influences and that "Machine Aesthetic" as the Eameses put it. They were not only designing the processes by which they were made but they were problem-solving shipping logistics and cutting down on their carbon footprint long before anyone else. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, a new interest in the ESU pieces arose! Herman Miller in collaboration with the Eames Office reintroduced these iconic pieces in 1996 and they have been in continuous production ever since. This is quality furniture that was designed to last several lifetimes! Think of it as functional art! Thank you to the Eames Office and Herman Miller for continuing to produce iconic designs that make living better!
