Hurricane Andrew Aftermath Video - Homestead, Florida - August 1992

NEVER SEEN BEFORE VIDEO: Watch as Mike Theiss films his first ever Hurricane related subject at age 14 years. Mike had his father drive him down the Florida Turnpike from around the Kendall area down to the middle of the (18 mile) stretch connecting the Florida mainland to the Florida Keys where the edge of the eyewall ended. Basically this video was shot using a VHS camera while driving through the eyewall destruction zone 4 days after Andrew made landfall on August 24th, 1992.

Then towards the end of the video you will see the famous "God" sign that caused so much controversy. The story is many many years before Hurricane Andrew struck someone painted the word "God" on the back of one of the road signs. We had seen this for years and never thought anything of it. Well, after Andrew stuck and when you would drive south through Homestead to the Keys every single sign was blown down or just gone until you reached the "God" sign. This was the first sign standing after 25+ miles and just after it the damage significantly lessened as this was the edge of the sharp gradient eyewall which spared Key Largo, if Andrew went just 20 miles further south Key Largo would have been wiped out !
