10 Checks Before You Start Hardware Development

Think you’re ready to start developing your hardware product?

Before you move into prototyping, tooling, or production, there are some critical things you need to confirm first.

In this clip, Paul Adams shares a practical 10-point pre-start checklist for hardware product development. If one of these items is missing, your project may already be at risk of delays, rework, cost increases, or stalled progress.

The checklist covers:

1. Product requirements document
2. Key dimensions and form factor
3. Mechanical files and critical dimensions
4. Electronics files, block diagrams, and Gerber files
5. Feature list and must-have functions
6. Regulatory requirements
7. Volume and market assumptions
8. Development, production, and marketing budget
9. Stakeholder availability for sign-off
10. Agreed scope and contract

The key point: being excited to start is not the same as being ready to start.

Before you ask a manufacturer to move forward, make sure the foundations are clear, agreed, and signed off.
