A Tribute to Kim and Paul Spriet

When Kim Spriet became a patient at St. Joseph’s more than 20 years ago, little did she know she would also become the architect behind a longstanding and successful fundraiser to improve eye care and research in the region.

Kim was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, an inherited form of macular degeneration that causes blurriness or a large dark spot in the centre of one’s vision. Wanting to raise awareness and funds, she approached her physician, Dr. John Gonder, about organizing a fundraiser to help, and the Run for Retina Research was born.

For 20 years, Kim and Paul Spriet poured their hearts into the Run for Retina Research with support from family, friends and community partners. The event raised more than $650,000 in support of the Ivey Eye Institute, helping fund critical research projects and medical equipment. Most recently, Run for Retina Research completed the funding necessary to expand emergency eye care services at St. Joseph’s. Because of their efforts, St. Joseph’s has been able to continuously improve care for people living with eye diseases and disorders.

In honour of their 20-year commitment to raising funds for the Ivey Eye Institute through Run for Retina Research, St. Joseph's paid Tribute to Kim and Paul at the the 2023 St. Joseph's Tribute Dinner, where this video originally premiered.
