For her graduation project, Patina, Kritima Ahuja explores the relationship between time, materiality, and memory through a collection that reimagines delicate lace in metal, allowing it to evolve and transform over time.

Mentored by Dr. Nisaphi Lyndem, the project draws from the history of lace as a symbol of craftsmanship, exclusivity, and labor. By translating its intricate patterns into metal, Kritima creates objects that begin in a state of precision and brilliance, only to gradually shift through oxidation, patina finishes, rust dyeing, and surface distressing.

Rather than viewing these changes as deterioration, the project embraces them as traces of experience. Surfaces become archives of handling, exposure, and time, where gloss softens into matte and perfection gives way to character.

Patina invites us to reconsider how value is perceived—not as something fixed and pristine, but as something that deepens through transformation. ✨
