Guys, when picking handline fishing equipment, the reel is second most important. Why? Your hands and line are most important, but you have to store and fish them efficiently. Of all the reels I've tried, the Cuban yoyo or what some call a handline fishing spool or handline fishing reel is the most elegant, durable and efficient way to manage your line. (Yes, I do consider the hand and line to be one piece of equipment. I can't buy new hands, but I can buy new line.)

I started designing, making and importing handline fishing equipment because most of your tackle stores cater toward rod-and-reel fishermen. Even the line we use is different. Although handline fishing is not equipment heavy in terms of costs and amount of gear needed, there are some things we need to do well, like store the line.

Stick Handlines

The simplest handlines are stick handlines . You can hold a lots of line, but you'll end up with lots of tangles because monofilament on a small stick will retain so much memory that you'll have a nightmare keeping it straight when deploying, casting and reeling, thus the need for low memory monofilament lines like Sunset's Amnesia.

Stick lines are cheap, but not the most effective way to manage your line.
The Cuban Yoyo

The Cuban Yoyo is the most refined, simplest, most durable, and most functional piece of handline fishing equipment I own. It holds the line in large loops that keep it nearly straight so it won't tangle too easily even with plain mono. Reeling is a pleasure because they're light.

They're durable, what I call sailor proof. They can take the abuse and neglect of a fisherman's environment.

You can buy plastic handline fishing reels on Ebay and Amazon. They're great, but plastic will deteriorate in the sun via UV damage. That's the second reason I started making these on my own: something that could resists UV damage, yet retain the beauty lost now that everything is made out of plastic.
