What makes Tyler the Creator’s 2017 album Flower Boy so important? Tyler the Creator is a rapper originating from California with a long and infamous career. He earned his fame as leading member of rap collective Odd Future, the same group that spawned stars such as Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, Syd and Tyler himself. For a long time, with the release of his albums Bastard, Goblin, Wolf and Cherry Bomb, Tyler was an incredibly polarizing figure. With the release of Flower Boy in 2017 Tyler showed a softer side of himself with refreshing, original beats and heartfelt lyricism. Flower Boy took Tyler from being a niche figure with an ugly reputation to one of the most respected rappers in the game, influencing everyone from Kanye West to Brockhampton.
