From 12-Year-Old Bride to the “She-Wolf of France” #history

Isabella of France was born in 1295, the daughter of King Philip IV of France. At just twelve years old, she was married to Edward II of England to secure peace between the two powerful kingdoms. She arrived in England admired for her beauty, intelligence, and grace. But her marriage soon became deeply humiliating. Edward showed intense favoritism toward his close companion Piers Gaveston, granting him titles, wealth, and influence that angered the English nobles and sidelined the young queen. Gaveston’s dominance at court created resentment and political chaos. Although he was later executed by rebellious barons, Isabella’s position did not improve.

Edward soon formed another powerful attachment. this time to Hugh Despenser the Younger. The Despensers gained enormous power and wealth, seizing lands and punishing their enemies. Isabella herself was stripped of income, her estates were taken, and many of her supporters were imprisoned or executed. Her household was broken apart, and her children removed from her influence. Once the cherished princess of Europe, she found herself isolated, watched, and politically powerless.

In 1325, when her brother Charles IV of France seized English territories in France, Isabella traveled there to negotiate peace. She refused to return to England while the Despensers remained in power. Instead, she became the focus for nobles opposed to Edward’s rule. In France, she formed an alliance with Roger Mortimer and may have become his lover. In 1326, Isabella and Mortimer landed in England with a small force that quickly gained widespread support. Edward’s allies fled, the Despensers were captured and executed, and Edward II was forced to abdicate.

Her son was crowned Edward III of England, and Isabella ruled as regent alongside Mortimer, making her one of the most powerful women in medieval Europe. Her reign ended in 1330 when Edward III seized power and had Mortimer executed, retiring his mother from political life.

She lived on for nearly three more decades, dying in 1358 at around 62. History gave her the name "The She-Wolf of France."
