The Only Ship that Germany Should Never Have Attacked
On March 24, 1916, the unsuspecting French cross-Channel steamer Sussex was on a voyage from Folkestone to Dieppe when chaos descended upon the vessel's serene decks. Seemingly, the ship had struck a mine.
The battered Sussex managed to navigate her way to safety. However, with the triumph of survival, a haunting toll was exacted. Among the casualties, fifty souls met their untimely demise, including twenty-five US citizens who had embarked on the ill-fated voyage.
As the fragments of a malevolent torpedo were discovered within one of the lifeboats, the feeble German assertion that the Sussex had fallen victim to a mine was swiftly dismissed.
Unbeknownst to Oberleutnant zur See Herbert Pustkuchen, his ill-fated decision had plunged his government into a veritable diplomatic crisis.
But after amassing an impressive raiding record during the war, UB-29 mysteriously disappeared. Her story would not come full circle until many decades later, in 2017…
