Finishing Oak Tanned Leather by Rolling- Hide Tanning Vlog
There are two main ways I finish vegetable tanned leather, Broken very soft and pliable or pasted out flat. The flat leather can either be left flat as is, or broken in by working to be more flexible to various degrees. This softening is accomplished by rolling the leather, because it is a technique that doesn't distort or stretch the skin out. Using rolling, you can keep the skin flat, as it was dried. Two options when rolling to soften leather are to roll it with the grain inward, or outward. If the leather to be finished is rolled with the grain on the outside, no matter how it is rolled and worked, the grain will just stretch more and it will remain smooth, or become smoother. If the leather is rolled with the grain to the inside, all working of the skin will compress the leather and wrinkles will form. The rolling can be done to various degrees to achieve more or less pliability of the skin. It need not be rolled or worked at all, and when the cattle skin in this series is finished, we will finish some leather by simply drying it flat, or we may even compress it further to make it even more firm.Thank you everyone for the views, shares and support :D
