Zoonomia – Hereditary Diseases
In the international Zoonomia Project, researchers have sequenced the genomes
of 240 different mammal species, including the human species. One of the goals is to study
hereditary disease in humans and animals. The researchers are trying to understand
why humans inherit disease and which parts of the genome that are causing these problems. By looking at the Zoonomia project data, they can see positions in the genome that have stayed the same over 100,000,000 years of evolution. They are probably functional and there for the regulatory elements that determine when proteins are made. For cancer, they could see that the mutations in those regulatory elements, not just in the protein-coding sequence,
can actually determine which genes run amok and cause cancer. The new findings
are already being used in cancer research, on brain tumours that affect children. Interviews with Kerstin Lindblad-Toh, Jennifer Meadows and Karin Forsberg Nilsson.
