Coldness and callousness can happen in a toxic family where the parent is showing some signs of antisocial personality disorder (or psychopathy).

Cynicism tends to be at the core of those who have traits of Machiavellianism which includes the personality traits of cold indifference, resentment and anger, manipulation and deception, and lack of internalized morality.
