I remember on my 7th birthday, I was particularly excited about one gift. It was a first aid kit toy. My relatives asked me multiple times if I was gonna be a doctor when I grew up, but I always said “No, I’m gonna be a nurse!”. They laughed, saying I was joking, but I wasn’t. I thought it was the best job in the world.

The day I got my acceptance letter to my dream college was… Bittersweet. I was over the moon, they didn’t accept many people and had the best nursing program, but then I received some bad news. I was celebrating with my parents at a restaurant, when my mom got up to answer a phone call. She came back to the table with tears in her eyes. My grandma was in the hospital. She had suddenly fallen ill. I was heartbroken and worried, but I turned these feelings into fuel. I had even more motivation to become a nurse now, because I wanted to be able to take care of my grandma.

Moving day was emotional, to say the least. My college was far from home, so I had to say goodbye to my mom, my childhood home and my dog, then drive five hours with my dad to move into my dorm. My dad wanted to get home as soon as possible after he dropped me off, so we kept our goodbyes short and I carried my stuff into the lobby. Only after I put my stuff down, I looked around. There were no guys to be seen, only girls running around, carrying their stuff into their dorms, like me. The person in charge of the dorm building came up to me. She was a short older lady with a huge attitude. She murmured something about me being a boy, then led me up the stairs to my floor. The floor was basically a super long hallway. I kept expecting her to stop at a room and give me my key, but she kept walking until we reached the end. You see, there were about six dorms on each side of the hall, then on one side there were the toilets, a janitor’s room, and THEN my room. They purposefully wanted to keep me away from all the girls.
“So… there’s no men’s dorms?” I asked the lady, who grunted a “No” in response, then asked “what man wants to be a nurse?” I was slightly offended, but it was nothing I hadn’t heard before.

I was chilling in my room, watching a movie on my laptop in bed, when there was a knock on my door. I got up to answer it, and found a group of girls.
“So it’s true, there’s a guy!” One of them said. Another one asked “Can we come in?”, which I answered by opening the door wider and letting them in. They looked around my room and suddenly I was embarrassed of the mess. My suitcase was thrown open on the floor, with clothes spilling out, and my walls were bare and a mess. The girls shook their heads, and then one of them announced “We have a lot of work to do”.
They started walking back and forth between their rooms and mine, grabbing paint, brooms, tape and all sorts of things that I couldn’t even keep track of. I was getting dizzy from how quickly they moved. By the end of the day, my room looked great. They had painted my walls, hung up my posters, somehow put a small couch in there and added these cool lights. I ordered pizza while they worked, and when they finished we all sat down to eat.
“We’re gonna have to protect you” One of them said as she chewed. “A lot of girls are gonna want you to themselves” She finished. That's the way I made friends in college. These five girls, Naomi, Ruby, Cora, Sam and Siena just walked into my life and fixed it. We sat there talking for hours. At one point, Siena pointed out I had pizza sauce on my chin. She licked her thumb and wiped it off. I felt myself start to blush at that, and at her smile. I quickly changed the subject,
