How a SALTY Counterspell Has a Precious Backstory 😭

A free counterspell in Magic The Gathering - you love or hate it. But what is actually happening in the art for Fierce Guardianship?

On the plane of Ikoria, known for great beasts and bonders who could form connections with these beasts, lived the Shaman Gavi. Unlike the other humans who lived in sanctuaries safe and sequestered from the wildlife of the plane, Gavi lived in the Raugrin wilds.

At one point in her travels, Gavi stumbled upon a nest of cat-dinosaurs right as they hatched.

Their mother, missing, slain by a hunter, left a vacuum in their lives and Gavi, having stumbled on the nest, was imprinted upon - the cat-dinos designating her as their surrogate mother.

In the art for Fierce Guardianship, we see Gavi’s protectiveness over her brood in full force, the inscription reading “Hunt somewhere else. This is your only warning.”
