- Directory Structure: The server has a file system structure that allows users to navigate folders and files. Permissions can be set at various directory levels.
- Protocols: FTP can operate in two modes:
- Active Mode: The client opens a port and waits for the server to connect back to it.
- Passive Mode: The server opens a port and the client connects to it, which is often better for traversing firewalls.
- Security: While standard FTP is not encrypted, there are secure
alternatives:
- FTPS: FTP over SSL/TLS
- SFTP: Secure File Transfer Protocol, which operates over SSH.
