Whenever I have to design evening wear, I take refuge in old cinema. The 20s, the 40s and the 50s have been eras that I constantly revisit. Stories of Merle Oberon, songs of Edith Piaf, black and white portraits of Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Zsa Zsa Gábor, Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth have probably shaped my imagination of evening wear. As a student of design and fashion history, I was heavily influenced by the design ideology of Madame Vionnet, Fortuny, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean Patou and Jeanne Lanvin. My evening wear is not steeped in nostalgia, I am just an admirer of sensibilities that happen to be old-world. Clothing at that point of time was just beautifully made: romantic and feminine, with immaculate attention to handmade details.
And when I look at clothes of today, that is something that I miss. I guess I will always look at impossible glamour through an old-world eye
