Jeanne Moreau on "The Proprietor" (1996)

We take a look at the past to shape our future.

In 1996, Jeanne Moreau and her co-star Marc Tissot sat down with Charlie Rose to discuss "The Proprietor," her unexpected meeting with Ismail Merchant, and why at 68 she feels she's in a beautiful period of harvest.

On meeting Ismail Merchant: "I met James Ivory at their house outside New York, and I was disappointed. I wanted to meet that Indian man. Years later, there he was at the top of the staircase at the Indian Embassy in Paris, smiling. Something happened. He said he wanted to make a film with me because of Jules and Jim. And it became The Proprietor."

On growing older: "I don't think about my life with career and life separated. Everything goes together. Some people would say grow old, but I'm growing. I'm growing and I try to improve. I discover new interests. It's curiosity."

On what Lillian Gish told her: "I did a film on Lillian Gish. The last question I asked her was, 'If you had a child, what quality would you like this child to have?' She looked around and said, 'Curiosity.' And I love that. That's it."

On this time in her life: "I am in the beautiful period of harvest. Harvesting from all the life I have lived, all the seeds I planted, the people I have met. It's very enjoyable. But it shouldn't be the end. There should be something else after. You have to plant the seeds."

On the New Wave: "Jules and Jim was part of that. But I didn't so much work with the New Wave. I was beyond it. I worked with Orson Welles, I worked with Bunuel, I worked with Joe Losey. I was attracted to and I attracted the Mavericks. I still do."

On French cinema now: "There is an incredible period now starting. Lots of women as directors. Very interesting young men directors around 30, 35. A new generation pushing forward that doesn't relate to the New Wave. They want to tell a story, attract the audience, be original. They relate very closely to young American independent directors."
