Rules for Dating a Friend’s Ex. Is it a good or bad idea? Sometimes you can’t help but be attracted to a friend’s ex boyfriend or girlfriend. When that happens, should you date your friend’s ex? My answer is usually no. However, every situation is different and a lot of factors go into play. Especially how long the breakup has been. If it’s been awhile since your friend dated this person they might not mind if you date their ex. However, if the breakup is fresh than feelings might get hurt and you may become the rebound. Which is never good!

Here are 3 rules for dating a friend’s ex

1. Question if it’s worth it?
There is a good chance if you date your friend’s ex you will cause some drama and lose your friend. If you don’t care about this, that’s fine but it’s something to think about. Also, if you’re part of a friendship group it might paint you bad to the rest of your friends.

2. Consider why they broke up
You know why your friend and their ex broke up. That’s an issue to consider because all the negative factors that lead to the breakup might pop up in your relationship with them. Was it a bad breakup, amicable? If the break up was for a bad reason like cheating than that should be a red flag for you.

3. Talk to your friend
Yes you need to tell your friend the truth to clear the air. You’re not asking for their permission. But just let them know you’re going to date their ex. They might hang up on you but at least they heard it from you and not through gossip. If you feel they might get super angry you can always tell them through the phone.
