Sonya Yoncheva: Queste lagrime, sospiri • Aria of Salome (San Giovanni Battista - Stradella)

In his beautiful oratorio San Giovanni Battista, Alessandro Stradella conveyed, just with a soprano voice plus a soft orchestral accompaniment, an eerie, disturbing and somber atmosphere in the amazing aria in which Salome pleads Herod to give her the head of John the Baptist.

It's in my opinion of the simplest, yet most expressive and effective arias of the baroque repertoire, and Yoncheva's uniquely beautiful and sensual timbre shines through in his performance more than ever.
