And because a navy suit is more or less the menswear equivalent of a blank slate, there are literally limitless shirt and tie combinations that work with it. One thing that you should understand is that there are many, many different kinds of navy suits, both in terms of color and fabric. A navy suit can be very dark or on the lighter side of navy, like the Michael Andrews Bespoke suit featured in this video. In terms of fabric, the shiner or more sheen the fabric has, the more formal (and less versatile) it will be. If you want something with maximum versatility, the fabric you want is a hopsack fabric. It has a nice texture and will allow you to break the suit up into separates.
