Dulaar: Improved maternal and infant health among Indian tribal populations

India is home to over 5 million tribal women who struggle due to poor health conditions. Lack of adequate maternal care poses risks to infants, as well. In tribal regions, almost five women die every hour during childbirth and one in 36 babies die before their first birthday. This happens because essential healthcare is located at a distance, or it is unaffordable, or it is not inclusive enough.

Dulaar, which means affection in Santhali and Mundari languages, aims to improve health and wellbeing among tribal mothers and infants. It will reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths and improve their nutritional status and access to healthcare. Anamaya aims to ensure the well-being of tribal mothers and infants through a three-pillar strategy of building systems’ capacity, community engagement and strengthening knowledge around health of tribal communities. This video was produced to participate in The Maternal & Infant Health Award (2022).

The Maternal & Infant Health Award seeks bold solutions that will improve and accelerate equitable maternal and infant health outcomes among marginalized communities across the globe. Organizations from around the world are encouraged to apply. Competitive proposals will offer solutions that are community-led, impactful, durable, and, feasible.
