Thinking Out Loud #2: Competition in University

It's been increasingly obvious to me over the past two years, but lately the competition between my colleagues and me at the university has been tough to swallow. At this point, I think there is probably growing hatred between people whose academic pursuits are, in the long term, independent ventures about which the recent concerns seem unnecessary, and representative of honest unfriendliness. I myself can see this atmosphere shaping my perspective, and I'd like to articulate what I feel so I can better control my judgement of others. I don't think I'm alone in this, as two very competitive German universities with hundreds of students have shown me clearly that the desire of success can often conflict brashly with friendship.
