BBC Radio Merseyside: Liverpool Institute of Infection and Global Health
Prof Tom Solomon, Director of Liverpool's new Institute of Infection and Global Health is interveiwed by Simon Hoban of BBC Radio Mersyeside.
- The University of Liverpool has established a new Institute of Infection and Global Health, funded by the University and UK Government investment
The Institute will be located in a £90 million development that will bring together researchers from across the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The facility will include state-of-the-art laboratories to enable scientists to contribute more effectively to the major health challenges of the 21st Century.
- The Institute, which forms part of a restructure of the University's Faculty system, will bring together leading infection and global health researchers from across the University into a single Institute to complement the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Microbial Diseases, and the National Centre for Zoonosis Research. Investment in health sciences will also include new senior academic posts in infection and microbiology.
Key infection areas to be targeted by the new Institute include:
- vaccine preventable diseases such as diarrhoea and the brain infection encephalitis
-Food-borne infections and other issues relating to diseases of animal and humans
-Insect-transmitted diseases and other diseases potentially affected by climate change
-Severe hospital infections such as pneumonia
