How is honey produced?
How is honey produced?
A natural honeycomb doesn’t have a thick layer of honey on its surface! The shiny layer of honey we often see on honeycombs is usually added during processing. For bees, honey is an extremely valuable source of nutrition. That’s why they seal each filled cell with a thin layer of beeswax for protection. This method is the same for bees raised in artificial hives as well. The first step in harvesting honey is to carefully scrape off this protective wax layer. However, even after the wax is removed, the honey doesn’t flow out on its own. The honeycombs are placed into centrifuge machines to release the honey. As the machine spins at high speed, the honey is flung out of the cells and collects in a chamber at the bottom. Finally, workers open this chamber and gather the fresh, natural honey.
