Rizal Park Redevelopment Project update

Rizal Park is undergoing redevelopment that aim to transform the historic park into a world class tourist destination.

In Section 6 of Republic Act 11333, the eastern section of the Rizal Park is now appropriated to the National Museum of the Philippines to form what it calls the National Museum Complex.

The National Museum of Anthropology and National Museum of Natural History are both located at the eastern section of Rizal Park. There are plans to build four new buildings in the area two of them are museums an exhibition building and a pavilion.

These proposed four new buildings are planned to be constructed at the eastern section of Rizal Park. Once completed, the public will have easy access to these museums all in one place.

The Philippine National Herbarium is considered the largest collection in Southeast Asia housing more than a million specimens dating back to the 18th century and a science library that was unequaled in the Far East. PNH destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in 1946.

The proposed National Herbarium is a modern facility that will house the collection of Philippine floras. While the proposed National Planetarium will feature educational and entertaining shows about astronomy.

The Philippines is anticipating the surge of foreign tourists coming into the country after it won multiple travel awards from different international award organizations last year.

A new tourist facilities such as parks and museums will provide an additional attractions in the city where foreign tourists can visit.

In June last year, the relief map of the Philippines was demolished to pave the way for the construction of the proposed Quincentennial Exhibition Building. Barns said the fundamental basis for the demolition was Republic Act 11333 or the National Museum of the Philippines Act of 2018 that was the impetus for the agency to make a long-term plan, including building a new exhibition hall over the site of what used to be the Relief Map.

The children's playground located near the National Museum of Natural History has also been demolished last year as part of the redevelopment project. The popular playground used to be maintained by the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC).

Now the area is under the jurisdiction of the National Museum by virtue of the Republic Act 11333 or National Museum Act. According to Republic Act 11333, “The National Museum shall develop the National Museum Complex within and adjacent to Rizal Park and other identified areas with reference to
the Burnham Plan for Manila of 1905.”

The Burnham plan of 1905 would adapt Manila to modern needs much like Georges-Eugène Haussmann's renovation of Paris. Unfortunately, it didn't fully come to fruition.

The Burnham Plan For Manila is something a lot of architects, urban planners, and map enthusiasts look at with a heavy heart. It's often considered "paradise lost" as it championed streets, parks, railroads, and public buildings.

The ongoing construction of the new National Museum Complex where the proposed Quincentennial Pavillion, the proposed National Planetarium, National Herbarium and Quincentennial Exhibition Building shall be built beside the
existing National Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of Natural History. (According to bidding documents for the development of National Museum Complex in Manila, Phase I.)
