This Winterberry Planting Guide will set you up for having success with this beautiful winter interest shrub. Winterberries are either male or female plants. The female gets the berries, and the male provides the pollen. Be sure to plant both a male and a female so that you will have loads of berries come winter. You only need to plant one male to pollinate up to five female plants, and the male and female should be planted no more than 50' from each other for proper pollination to occur. The bloom time of the male and female must overlap, so be sure they are compatible. There are two distinct bloom times among winterberry hollies: early and late. Though the difference is usually just a matter of a week or two, male and female plants must be from the same group. When possible, they should also be selected from the same genetic line, which is indicated by similar names – for example, the ideal pollinator for Little Goblin Red is Little Goblin Guy, and the ideal pollinator for Berry Poppins is Mr. Poppins. One other reason your winterberry may not have developed berries is that it may have been pruned in the spring when it was flowering. Removing flowers removes berries. Instead of size controlling your winterberry, choose a cultivar that reaches your desired height and width.
