This week’s #excerpt is another double tongue feature! This excerpt has a unique challenge in that, along with maintaining a proper stylistic approach to the music, we’re required to lay down this syncopated feature within the double tongue tempo realm.

🎶 I emphasize within my own playing approach, and instruction for students/colleagues trying to learn and refine their double tongue, the importance of what I call having an “ambidextrous tongue”. This means that we’re comfortable both beginning and ending phrases off of the back articulation, not always starting on the front, or maneuvering an articulation pattern to land back on the front. For example, if we have to enter on the 2nd sixteenth note in a grouping (_TTT) while using a double tongue, many players would play (_TKT) and then add a second front articulation “Tah” to ground the landing. I instead deploy the articulation as (_KTK) to stay within the grid of TKTK (or “Tah Kah Tah Kah”) throughout every passage. This works especially well in this excerpt, and others such as Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony.
