UK Wildlife and Nature Photography | Photographing the Sand Martin
Amongst the UK Wildlife and Nature, the Sand Martin is a difficult subject to photograph. Fast flying very manoeuvrable. The Sand Martin at my local nature reserve makes for a great subject living in the sandbank.
Sand martins are about 12 cm long and have brown upper parts and a white throat. They have a dark breast band and a long, thin, black beak. They are agile fliers and feed on insects they catch in the air. Sand martins nest in colonies, excavating burrows in sandy banks. They lay four to six eggs, which hatch after about two weeks. The young birds fledge after about three weeks. They are active during the day and spend their time foraging, preening, and often sunbathing in groups.
At night they gather in communal roosts. Sand martins are fast and agile fliers, rarely landing on the ground and are often seen perching or in flight.
This video is Wildlife at its fastest.
