The Great Divide is a 2027 American animated buddy comedy film produced by Illumination and Plan B Entertainment, and distributed by Universal Pictures. Co-written and directed by Natasha Kline (in her feature directorial debut) from a screenplay she co-wrote with Mike White, the film stars the voices of Brad Pitt, Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, and John Mulaney.
The film marks a rare venture into feature-length character animation for Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment, combining the studio's prestige storytelling with Illumination’s signature slapstick visual style. The plot follows a suburban housecat (Pitt) and an erratic stray raccoon (DeVito) who must cross a newly constructed eight-lane highway to reunite with their respective families.
The Great Divide was theatrically released in the United States on June 18, 2027. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Kline’s direction, the energetic voice performances (particularly from Pitt and DeVito), and its departure from standard Illumination tropes toward a more character-driven narrative. It was rated PG by the MPAA for rude humor and action/peril.

Plot
Barnaby (Brad Pitt) is a pampered, highly neurotic Persian cat living a life of absolute luxury in the quiet suburb of Green Hills. His world is upended when a massive municipal construction project overnight builds an expansive, eight-lane super-highway directly through his neighborhood, separating his house from the local park where his owner accidentally leaves him.
Stranded on the wrong side of the asphalt, Barnaby encounters Scraps (Danny DeVito), an eccentric, street-smart raccoon who has been separated from his family's favorite dumpster on the opposite side. Despite their mutual distaste for one another, the duo forms an uneasy alliance to cross "The Great Divide." Along the way, they enlist the help of a cynical pigeon named Mitzi (Awkwafina) and a deeply anxious golden retriever named Buster (John Mulaney). The journey forces Barnaby to abandon his domestic comforts and Scraps to trust someone other than himself.
Voice cast
Brad Pitt as Barnaby, an uptight, luxury-loving Persian cat trying to find his way home.
Danny DeVito as Scraps, a chaotic, garbage-obsessed common raccoon who agrees to help Barnaby.
Awkwafina as Mitzi, a sarcastic city pigeon with a broken wing who serves as their navigator.
John Mulaney as Buster, a friendly but intensely phobic neighborhood golden retriever.
Keegan-Michael Key as Chief Brody, a zealous animal control officer determined to catch the runaway animals.
Production
Development
In early 2025, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri announced a surprise partnership with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment to develop an original animated feature. Pitched as a "suburban survival comedy," the film was intended to blend Plan B's track record for prestige, character-focused storytelling with Illumination’s massive commercial appeal.
Directing and Writing
Television animation veteran Natasha Kline, celebrated for her work on Disney's Big City Greens and her own creation Primos, was hired to direct the project, marking her feature film directorial debut. Kline co-wrote the screenplay alongside Mike White (The White Lotus, Migration). Kline stated she wanted to channel the classic, high-stakes kinetic energy of 1990s road-trip comedies but ground it in the micro-perspective of small animals.
Casting
In September 2025, Brad Pitt was cast in the leading voice role, marking his first time voicing an animated character since DreamWorks Animation's Megamind (2010). Danny DeVito joined the cast shortly after, with Kline noting that the vocal contrast between Pitt's smooth, anxious delivery and DeVito's gruff energy provided the foundation for the film's comedy.
Reception
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, The Great Divide holds an approval rating of 84% based on 185 reviews. The website's consensus reads:
"Led by a brilliantly matched Brad Pitt and Danny DeVito, The Great Divide finds director Natasha Kline injecting a refreshing dose of heart and narrative ambition into Illumination's crowd-pleasing formula."
The New York Times praised the film's visual design, noting that "Kline brings an indie-animation sensibility to a studio landscape that frequently plays it too safe." Variety heavily lauded the voice chemistry between the leads, stating that "Pitt plays against his handsome archetype perfectly as a fragile, high-maintenance feline, while DeVito steals every scene he's in." Some criticism was aimed at the predictable third-act misunderstanding, though critics agreed the visual gags and emotional core more than compensated for it.
