Marie Antoinette was a woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. She married Louis XVI at a time when France was on the verge of collapse and she became a scapegoat for the French people's scorn for the extravagance of the monarchy. She is best known for a scandal in which she had no part (Diamond Necklace Affair) and for saying something that she did not say ("Let them eat cake!). During the Reign of Terror, Marie Antoinette was unceremoniously executed, shocking Edmund Burke and many others across Europe.
