Colorado is home to two of the most spectacular collectible minerals in the United States — the state gem and the state mineral — and both of them are found in the wild by regular collectors. This video covers the four minerals and three primary locations every Colorado rockhound needs to know.

Colorado's aquamarine ranks among the finest in the world — gem-quality crystals found at some of the highest elevation collecting sites in North America. The rhodochrosite from the Sweet Home Mine area near Alma is considered by gemologists to be the finest ever found anywhere on Earth — a single specimen from this mine, the Alma King, is on permanent display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. And Crystal Peak near Lake George is one of the most productive publicly accessible crystal sites in the United States, producing amazonite and smoky quartz growing together in the same pegmatite pockets.
