General Aladeen, the eccentric and oppressive ruler of the fictional North African country of Wadiya, is sent to New York City for a United Nations speech. When a plot removes him from power, he must navigate the modern world without his usual luxuries and power. Along the way Aladeen discovers the struggles of ordinary life, falls in love, and faces moral dilemmas that challenge his authoritarian ways.
