I think that Michael was not made for the life he chose. He was really different from the rest of his family, as he said at the beginning of the first film. And that life in Sicily with Apollonia could really be a happy alternative where he could live as he wanted.

But we know how it ended. This radically changed Michael, making him hungry of power and stability for his family. Trying in every way to imitate his father. Knowing, however, that he's not Vito.
