It appears the German soldiers are their lovers, the French girls carry cases suggesting they want to accompany their boyfriends back to Germany. An American soldier intervenes: he seems to be explaining to them the women cannot go whilst also reassuring them. One woman collapses with grief - heart wrenching stuff!
