Mule - Donkey - Khachchad

Donkey - a very useful pack animal in the mountainous part of Nepal where the road is yet to reach; is the major source of goods transportation. It is a relatively powerful animal that can travel at high altitude carrying heavier load on its back. In the clip - taken in Upper Dolpo, Nepal, the owner of the donkeys - Karma is busy for morning feeding. It was hired for the trek from Jomsom (Mustang district) to Juphal (Dolpo district) for 17 days in May 2016; run by Alpine Exodus.

There were horses and of course donkeys for the trek. Sounds a bit unusual that trekkers hire horses from the beginning till the end! Well, the trip was a luxury trip in terms of organizing and our clients wanted to make sure that incase they couldn't trek, they would complete the trip on the horses. It was not a bad idea!

The route is fairly off-the-beaten-path trek! For days there are no houses and villages. The source of food and accommodation is to be self-carried from Kathmandu or Jomsom; so Alpine Exodus had everything from tents to kitchen utensils and various semi luxury food items for eating. This trek can be started from Juphal and ended at Jomsom also as clockwise or venturing from west to east; ours was anticlockwise. Very recently (as I am editing this on June 13, 2021) there's a road access upto Phalyak - above Kagbeni and a little further! So, if you are thinking to do this trek, your starting point can be Phalyak instead of Jomsom that we had.
