Testing How to Stretch Shoes with a Hairdryer

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to test whether you could really stretch your too small leather shoes to fit with a hair dryer. The subjects for today’s experiment are a cute pair of black leather pumps I purchased to wear to work just before I moved. Since I didn’t have time to try them on properly, I discovered later that they were way too small to wear. Since I was in another state, and couldn’t return them, they’ve stayed in my closet.

I knew I wanted to stretch the shoes to fit, or at least to try it. I’d heard about stretching shoes at home with heat and wanted to give it a shot. While looking into how to do it, I discovered that the method was much simpler and less labor intensive than I imagined. I was thinking it would take an hour or more, but actually most sites said two minutes.

I decided to give it a try, to film the test, and share my results in case you’ve ever wondered if you actually can stretch shoes at home.

How it went: I was convinced putting on three pairs of socks, cramming my feet into too tight shoes and blasting them with a heat source was going to be miserable. I was happy to discover that wasn’t the case. I couldn’t even feel the heat under my socks, let alone burn myself. So that’s awesome!

After you turn off the hair dryer (after about two minutes), be sure to keep the shoes on. Walk around, dance, make dinner. I did all three. Let the shoes cool off on your feet and in shape. After that, take off the socks and see if it worked.

Some general FYI’s I kept my hair dryer on low and medium heat the whole time, continuously moved it back and forth and switched shoes so I wouldn’t burn the leather and made sure to not get too close to the surface of the shoes.

I have read online that this method could ruin your shoes. So if you’re worried about that it could happen, maybe try a professional first.
