Preston Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Lancashire, and around 30 miles northwest of Manchester, is the city of Preston.

Preston's name derives from Old English, meaning 'priest's settlement'. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Prestune'. In 1179 Preston was granted a charter from Henry II to become a market town.

By the 16th century Preston had become an industrial town, producing linen and wool. In the 1760s, Preston-born inventor Richard Arkwright built and patented the water frame - a water-powered spinning machine that produced cotton without the need for skilled human labour. Some have dubbed him the 'Father of the Industrial Revolution'. In the following years several cotton mills emerged in Preston.

Preston was the first place in the country outside of London to have gas lighting on its streets. The Preston Gas Light Company was founded in 1815 with the first lighting appearing in the following year.

Notable architecture in Preston, in order of appearance, includes Preston Minster, built in the 1850s, Sessions House, the Edwardian courthouse with the tall tower, built in 1904, Harris Museum, completed in 1893 with its Parthenon-esque pillars and Fishergate Baptist Church, built in 1858 though now disused - this is the one with the prominent spire that is visible at the end of the video.

Preston is represented in football by Preston North End F.C. Founded in 1880, Preston North End play just northeast of the city centre at Deepdale, which is currently football's oldest ground in terms of continuous use by a major league club.

Preston is the administrative centre for the county of Lancashire. In 2002 it was one of two towns in the UK to be granted city status as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The other was Newport in South Wales.

Famous people from Preston include animator Nick Park, cricketing legend Andrew Flintoff and footballer Kevin Kilbane who defected to Ireland.
