Dollywood Express 70: Cinderella Climbs the Mountain

On June 17, Dollywood reopened to begin their 2020 season. At the head of the Express that day was former White Pass & Yukon 70, "Cinderella." Due to social distancing requirements, the coaches were running less than 1/3 full and the heavy narrow-gauge mikado had no trouble hauling 10 trains per day up the steep grades to the top of the mountain; but that doesn't mean she and her crew didn't put on a grand show for the park guests!

Built in 1938 by Baldwin, 70 worked on the White Pass & Yukon Route in Alaska and Canada through World War II and until her retirement in 1963. In 1977, she and WP&YR 71 were bought by Silver Dollar City Tennessee and 70 was put on display before finally being restored to service by Dollywood in 1987 where she has been running ever since. She operates alongside fellow White Pass & WWII veteran 192, "Klondike Katie."
