Michael Stanley Regan, Pres. Biden’s nominee for administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, answers questions from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee as part of his confirmation hearing. If confirmed, he would be the first Black man to head the environmental agency. Regan previously served as the top environmental official in North Carolina where he led the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and worked for an environmental advocacy group called Environmental Defense Fund, where he focused on curbing the impacts of the climate crisis in the southeastern United States and improving air quality in polluted communities. Regan would be taking over an agency roughly nine times the size of his current role, whose personnel and budget has been slashed under the Trump administration. He would be in charge of reinstating or restoring the more than 100 different environmental rules, protections, and regulations former Pres. Trump rolled back since taking office, mostly targeting air pollution and emissions, drilling and extraction, and infrastructure and planning.
