AI Slow Motion in DaVinci Resolve — Why I Don’t Use It on Paid Projects

Why I don’t rely on AI slow motion in DaVinci Resolve for paid projects

DaVinci Resolve Studio includes AI Optical Flow, a powerful feature that can generate new frames and create smooth slow motion - even from standard frame rate footage.
On paper, it sounds like a perfect solution.
In this video, I share my real-world experience using AI Optical Flow in DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.3 (build 10) and explain why I don’t rely on it for client work, even though it can look impressive in certain scenarios.
This video is not about bashing the feature.
AI Optical Flow can be useful - but in professional workflows, reliability matters more than impressive demos.

Part of a bigger series
This video is part of a series where I break down Studio-only features in real workflows and help you decide whether DaVinci Resolve Studio is worth buying.
In the main overview video, I compare Free vs Studio and also share a practical way to save money when buying the Studio license.

I break down:
- What AI Optical Flow actually does in DaVinci Resolve
- When AI slow motion works well
- Where it fails (and why those failures matter on paid projects)
- Why I prefer shooting high frame rates (like 120fps) instead of “fixing it in post”
- The real performance and workflow cost of using AI Optical Flow
- How I personally test it before deciding whether to use it

Important note
All observations in this video are based on my own testing and real projects at the time of recording. Software evolves, and I hope Blackmagic Design continues improving the AI Optical Flow model so it becomes more reliable in the future.
