Easter Persecution Fears, Syrian Christians Prepare to Flee

Christians in Syria are preparing to leave the country for good, convinced that the new provisional government is complicit in the wave of Islamist attacks targeting them. After the brutal Palm Sunday attack in Hama Province, many say they have reached their breaking point. They no longer trust Ahmed al-Sharaa's government to protect them.

Churches have canceled Easter services, and outdoor celebrations have been scrapped. In Aleppo, where Christians once filled the streets with marching bands and joyful processions from church to church, this Easter will be quiet, subdued, and fearful — more suppressed than at any time during the past 12 years of civil war.

Young Voices NYC Debate series host, Hekmat Matthew Aboukhater, says Christians "are now afraid to openly show their faith out of fear of retribution and violence from neighboring communities." Christians feel they have no choice but to flee.
