Reheating Rice Can Be Toxic

Did you know reheating rice can be toxic?

Rice contains Bacillus bacteria, which can multiply if left at room temperature for too long.

When reheated improperly, this bacteria isn’t destroyed, producing toxins that may lead to nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Storing rice in the refrigerator too long can also allow mold to grow, releasing liver-damaging aflatoxins.”

For safer eating, consume fresh rice. If storing, cool it in a bowl of cold water, refrigerate within an hour, and reheat thoroughly to 165°F (75°C).

Leaving rice out at room temperature can invite Bacillus cereus, causing “fried rice syndrome.” If you eat this contaminated rice, you might feel sick quickly with nausea and vomiting, or experience cramps and diarrhea later on.
