The Oktava MK-012 is one of those mics that seems to work well in most conditions. Then you can improve the sound by changing the capsule.

The omni capsule is great for recording more than two people in an interview like situation. It picks up nicely from all around and I've even used it plonked upright on a mini stand in the middle of a table. It picked up everyone around it.

The cardioid is one that many like to use boomed. It has good rear rejection so if you have a low ceiling, this one might work well. It is slightly more treble laden than many other cardioid pencil mics, but that helps with clarity of speech.

The hyper-cardioid is more directional amore 'smooth' kind of sound. It rejects very well so is a good one to use in noisy situations or in a room full of reverb. This one is often used by videographers, boomed on a pole or stand.

There are other capsules that you can buy separately as well as a -10dB attenuator and a high pass filter. They are physical additions to the mic and screw to the top of the body before adding the capsule, so there are no switches on the mic.

This one and the SE8 are my two favourite pencil microphones. This one is more versatile than the SE8 because of the different heads that you can put on it.
