Arnold Bax 'Tintagel' - Adrian Boult conducts

This is another contribution to the current celebration of British music on the radio and features Sir Adrian Boult's 1954 recording of Sir Arnold Bax's 'Tintagel'. The Wiki article on this pieces states that it was composed in 1919 and is Bax's best-known orchestral work. The article continues: "Bax had visited Tintagel Castle during the summer of 1917, accompanied by pianist Harriet Cohen, with whom he was carrying on an affair at the time ... The music is meant to depict a castle perched high on the rocks, battered on a sunny summer day by the Atlantic Ocean." It adds that the music has "a certain Celtic flavour," recalling King Arthur's connection to the castle, and it also quotes a motif from Wagner's opera 'Tristan und Isolde.' Boult conducts the London Philharmonic in this excellent transfer on the Pristine Audio label. (PASC 193).
