Ocean Gyres and Geostrophic Flow
The circulation pattern in the ocean gyres is an example of geostrophic flow. Geostrophic flow is a type of particle motion that occurs when the forces acting on particles are so weak relative to the influence of the rotation of the Earth, that Coriolis deflection is the factor that determines the direction of motion.
