Identifying Rank in the British Army (1775-81)

A common question I receive is, "If you're a sergeant, shouldn't you have stripes?"

Well, as it turns out, no. Moreso than just having different rank patches, as with later periods, the uniforms of British soldiers during the American Revolution varied wildly - not just between ranks, but frequently between regiments, as well.

To help illustrate some of the differences between the uniforms of a private, an NCO, and a commissioned officer, I am joined in this video by Mr. Brandon F, as usual, and also by the 54th's Lieutenant Colonel, Steve Gardner.
